A silver mounted Scottish Dirk given by Queen Victoria to Viscount Churchill

An Historic fine silver mounted Scottish Dirk given by Queen Victoria to Viscount Churchill, with the Maker's mark S&H. The blade with a faceted back edge and single fuller on each side, the wooden hilt carved with basket weave and set with studs, the pommel set with an amber glass stone within a pierced foliate mount, in its leather covered scabbard, the locket and mounts decorated with chequer, chevron and interlocking designs, the bi-knife and fork mounted en-suite; together with a rectangular belt buckle decorated in a similar manner to the dirk and engraved, 'FROM THE QUEEN. FEBY. 21st 1872' Both pieces come with hand written paper labels inscribed, 'From Queen Victoria to Lord Churchill' (Francis Spencer, 2nd Baron Churchill). Queen Victoria records in her Journal for the 21 February 1872 "Held a Council, before which I saw Ld Ripon, & told him some particulars about my intending to go to Germany, for him to explain to Mr Gladstone....Jane C.[Lady Churchill], Ly Morton & Gen: Hardinge dined."
